Centre for Alternative Technology
The Centre for Alternative Technology offers solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources.
CAT demonstrates practical ways of addressing these problems. Leading by example, CAT aims to show that living more sustainably is not only easy to attain but can provide a better quality of life.
The Graduate School of the Environment (GSE) offers a range of inspirational post-graduate programmes. A unique combination of leading professionals, academics and authors create innovative solutions at Europe’s leading Environmental centre.
All courses at the Graduate School of the Environment (GSE) examine environmental issues, energy and buildings. To help meet varying interests and career aspirations GSE offers unique angles of approach.
- MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies covers building design, energy and wider environmental issues. It is intended to be accessible for all those with an interest in contemporary sustainable issues. This course has two methods of access; it can be undertaken by attendance at CAT (with the opportunity of individual modules undertaken via distance learning) or by the wholly Distance Learning Route
- MSc Renewable Energy in the Built Environment focuses particularly on the technical and engineering side of renewable energy technology.
- The Part 2 Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies considers energy and the environment in the context of architectural design.
- CAT also runs a Professional Doctorate programme - the Doctor of Ecological Building Practices.
As well as providing information and interactive displays to the public, CAT has been host to courses and consultancy for universities, business, local government and NGOs for over 30 years. The new Wales Institute for Sustainable Education (WISE) will strengthen this position and allow even more good work to continue. This unique and beautiful building with its rammed earth lecture theatre, timber frame and hemp walls is available as a meeting, event and conference venue.
The Centre for Alternative Technology also offers a variety of short residential courses covering a range of sustainability issues. Courses on renewable energy, environmentally friendly building techniques, and water and sanitation solutions can help you learn more about sustainable ways of living, and allow you to put your ideas into practice.
We also offer introductory classes in ecology, woodland management, organic gardening and wilderness skills, as well as specialist courses aimed at educators and trade professionals.
By providing inspiration, information and skills, short courses at the Centre for Alternative Technology help enable you to live and work in a more sustainable way.
