Stride Treglown Architects win award for eco - friendly Sainsbury’s

Stride Treglown Architects has been awarded the ‘Best New Building’ for its design of the new Llanthony Wharf Sainsbury’s store at this year’s Gloucester Civic Awards.

The awards, organised by Gloucester City Council, Gloucester Civic Trust, The Citizen newspaper and Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, were held on 21 July and designed to recognise the high standards of architecture in Gloucester.

The new Sainsbury’s building was influenced by the former warehouses within the Quays and nearby Docks, and has been designed to allow maximum natural lighting through the facades as well as the roof, taking advantage of the north-south orientation.

The new store fronts onto the canal as part of the Gloucester Quays redevelopment, and provides 4360 sq m of ground floor retails space with customer and staff restaurants, as well as a new petrol station.

Robert Sargent, director at Stride Treglown, said: “We‘re delighted to be involved in such a hugely successful project through our work with Sainsbury’s, and this award is just the icing on the cake. The Gloucester Quays development has transformed the town – congratulations to all.”

The building also received a commendation in the ‘Best Climate-Friendly Scheme’ category.
