Viridor gets green light for Welsh power plant

Waste management company Viridor has been given the go ahead to build a £203m combined heat and power plant on an industrial site in Cardiff.

The facility at Trident Park in Cardiff Bay will generate 30MW of electricity, enough to provide heat to more than 50,000 homes in Cardiff and a number of local businesses. It would be able to treat up to 350,000 tonnes of residual waste every year.

Viridor is in the process of negotiating an agreement with local businesses and councils in the Prosiect Gwyrdd waste management partnership to use their residual waste for the plant.

The plant is expected to take three years to build and would operate for 25 years.
